Responding to the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) Initiative
Launched in 2010 and continuing to evolve, Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety. CSA has brought significant changes to companies under its jurisdiction. For example, the agency’s new Safety Measurement System (SMS) collects more data and makes that data more visible to the public, shippers and insurers. The initiative also monitors performance across new behavior analysis and safety improvement categories (BASICs), backed by aggressive efforts to identify and take action against carriers and individual drivers with poor safety performance records.
The Smart Risk fleet safety management system’s proactive approach and powerful data management and reporting capabilities give companies the best available tools to maintain CSA compliance and score well in the BASICs. But even companies with strong fleet safety management programs may be struggling to understand and adapt to CSA’s new requirements.
